FARMHOUSE TOUR: AVERY’S BEDROOM

August 28, 2020 By houseofhargrove@gmail.com

We have been in the farmhouse about 3 weeks now and are having so much fun making it our own.  Avery’s bedroom got a complete makeover.  She had kind of outgrown her last room, so I told her when we moved we could update it.  She wanted it purple and pink, but to have a big girl feel.  We both LOVE the way it turned out!

Avery’s new room is so pretty.  She has some of the best views in the house.  Her room gets tons of natural light and I love all the molding.  When we decided to re-do her room, we started with the paint color.  She wanted purple and we picked Sherwin Williams Wallflower.  It is a gorgeous soft purple with grey undertones. I think we will use this color in our new home as well.

Walmart always has the best decor at affordable prices and we found so many great options.  As, yall know if we need something I check Walmart first.  They have beautiful designs, great quality and you cannot beat their prices.   Our biggest struggle was deciding what to pick.

FURNITURE:

After we picked the paint color, we started with the furniture.  We kept some of the antique pieces from her last room, but she needed a new bed an a few other things.

BED: We both fell in love with this white metal Jenny Lind bed.  I love vintage inspired metal beds.  Braden’s room and our guest room have this beautiful bronze metal bed, but I wanted something lighter for Avery’s room and this one was perfect!  The spindle details are perfection!

BENCH:  How fun is this bench?!  It has a soft, fuzzy blush top with a brass base.  It comes in a few other colors, but this one was perfect for her room.  This has quickly become our cat’s favorite spot in our home!  It is just so soft and cozy (and pretty).

SAUCER CHAIR:  I bought these for both Avery and Braden and they were the best purchase!  They are super comfortable, very soft, fold up flat for easy storage and light weight so they can carry them without help.  They like to move them from their room to the playroom to watch movies.  Avery has also been doing her zoom calls for school in it.

TOY STORAGE: We bought this toy storage system a few years ago for our playroom and still love it.  They have a bunch of different colors, sizes, etc.  Even though this isn’t in her room, I wanted you to see how functional it is if you are looking for a way to store ALL.THE.THINGS!!

BEDDING:

Once we picked the furniture, it was time to pick bedding.  Like I mentioned she wanted it to feel like a big girl room, so we went with classic solid colors and lots of texture.  She also wanted soft and cozy!  DONE & DONE!

BEDSPREAD & SHAMS:  We picked this 3 piece blush comforter set and I was blown away.  Yall, it is so soft, the quality was great and they really focused on the details.  This set came with a bedspread and 2 shams for ONLY $43.99!!

SHEETS: These sheets are microfiber and super soft!  I love the ruffle detail.  We got the full size which comes with a flat sheet, fitted sheet and 4 pillow cases.  2 of the pillow cases have ruffles, 2 are plain.  They come in a few color options.

BLANKET:  The softest throw blanket ever!!  Braden keeps stealing it so we are going to order him one too!  It comes in tons of colors and is amazing!  Looks so cute on the end of her bed and she loves to wrap up in it when she sleeps at night.

BEDSKIRT: This cute ruffle bedskirt is ONLY $12!  It was perfect to complete the look!

FUZZY PILLOW:   We got this pillow in the store.  It is so soft (noticing a theme here) and cozy.  The purple color complimented her room perfectly.  It was only $14.99

SEQUIN PILLOW:  Who doesn’t love flippy sequins?  This rose gold/white pillow was the perfect final touch.  It added some fun and shine to her room.

DECORATIONS:

Now that we had the furniture and the bedding it was time for the final touches!

ART:  How beautiful is this art print?  It is from the Drew Barrymore FLOWER kids line and I just love it.  The details are so pretty!  The pink balloons coordinated perfectly.

BASKETS:  Not only are these baskets adorable, but they are super functional.  There come in a set of 4 and have several color options!  The white option with colorful pom poms was also so cute!!  We used them to store her stuffed animals and one in the bathroom to store extra toiled paper!  So many uses for these!

STAR PROJECTOR: I have shared this many times before and always list it as my top pick for kids gifts.  It is amazing yall.  Both Braden and Avery have one in their rooms.  It literally turns their entire room into a magical place at night.  It puts stars all over the ceiling and walls.  You can change the colors, make it spin and set a timer so it goes off after they are asleep.  We LOVE this thing!!

Avery and I had so much fun decorating this room together.  I love that she has her own space that she loves and makes our new house feel like home.  She said she likes it even better than her last room!

If you need help decorating your kids spaces check out YOUR ZONE and FLOWER KIDS.  They are both one stop brand shops on Walmart.com with lots of great ideas to complete a room.  From furniture to decor they have everything in 1 spot.

I know all of us are spending more time at home and lots of kids are learning virtually this year.  If you are looking for great furniture and decor for your kids check out Walmart.   They have so many great items perfect for making wonderful virtual learning spaces.

When designing our home I pulled inspiration from all over! Pinterest, Instagram, magazine, design books, etc. we had this long spot in our front entry that we were trying to figure out and when I saw this image (swipe to see) in @gilschaferthearchitect ‘s book it stopped me in my tracks. I loved the use of transoms and designated spaces. My architect @josephpaulhomes & his wife Michelle helped pull the whole look together. So happy with how it turned out.

My grandfather owned a grocery store in New Jersey. The scale hanging from the ceiling in our butler’s pantry was the scale in his store. My uncle had it for the longest time & gifted it to me when we moved into this home. I love it so much!! My mom has the cash register he used in his store in her home. I love decorating with items that have meaning & that tell a story.

I love hallways & nooks. They are a great way to add interest to your home. Natural light & details are key. This space connects our hearth room to the gameroom. The Dutch door goes out to our courtyard, the room at the end is my office and the door to the left (just out of the photo) goes to the pool bath. Lots going on in this space.
I saw this floor pattern in a design book & had to have it somewhere in our home. I love it so much!

✨REMODEL UPDATE: FAMILY ROOM✨

This family room had good bones, but we needed to declutter , maximize storage, update furnishings & make the space more functional.

There was a wall of shelves that was just too much. We purged and decorated with items that she loved & had sentimental value. So many homes are built with tons of open shelving and you have to be really careful in these spaces because they can become a spot for clutter instead of being intentional.
•added cabinet doors to 2 sections of shelves for some much-needed hidden storage.
•utilized the shelving that was separate from the other ones to make a designated bar space that is intentional and great for entertaining.
•found an gorgeous antique bar back to go against the wall that again is used as a bar when they entertain. Previously, it was a huge bench that took up width, but added no height to the wall. This is a major focal point in this space so we made it both functional and beautiful.
• I am not a huge fan of sectional couches unless they are in very specific areas. I think sometimes when people have a big room, they look for a big furniture to take up the space but it doesn’t actually give you the most seating and the spacing is sometimes awkward. They still really wanted a leather couch in there so we kept that, but then used more tailored chairs to frame the space.
• found this gorgeous coffee table on Facebook marketplace. Such a find!
•Removed the huge windmill fan that really took away from the gorgeous architecture of the ceiling with the beams.
•filled in dead space with functional furniture, like a cute table perfect for game night.
•scaled back the TV so it made more sense over the fireplace and went with a frame one so there could be pretty art up there as it is a main focal point. (Art was off in this photo, but typically it looks like a vintage painting)

So excited with how this space turned out. It’s lighter, brighter, more functional & a better use of space. They have walls of windows along the back of the house with a beautiful view and now you’re able to focus on that more.

✨REMODEL UPDATE: DAUGHTER’S BATHROOM ✨

Throughout this remodel you will see two constant goals…brighten up the spaces & add functional storage. This bathroom was dark & dated. We took everything out and had a fresh start.

•New paint, wallpaper, tile, fixtures, lighting, etc.
•Raised the height of the counters & some additional cabinetry extending up to the ceiling for much needed storage.
•Added cute details to the side of the counters
•Removed the tub & added a glass door to the shower to make the space feel bigger & more open.

This sweet girl has brought us so much joy! We are “foster failures” & couldn’t be happier about it. Callie has been the best addition to our family.
Chat GPT made this cute art from our Christmas picture of her. She was living her best life with all the ribbon from the presents.

I love a mudroom! I don’t care what size house I live in from here on out I’ll always have some “mudroom” space…even if it’s a tiny little spot. It’s so great to have a drop zone to keep organized. This space got lots of use during our ice storm with all the wet shoes, etc & these brick floors were great!!

Feels strange getting back to work this week. We’ve been living in PJs and been asking what day it was for about a week now. Snowmageddon 2026 was fun & we still have piles of ice on the ground….BUT nice to go back to a bit of a routine. January felt like 47 days 🤪
