New House: Tile Details

February 1, 2023 By houseofhargrove@gmail.com

Today is all about tile and what we used in our home.  I tried to go with very classic, timeless options with pops of fun in some rooms.  Here are all the details.

NEW HOUSE: TILE

KITCHEN:

I love subway tile.  It is classic, timeless, inexpensive and just adds texture everywhere.  We used 3X6 basic ceramic glossy white subway tile as our backsplash and carried it all the way up the wall.  I think that is a great way to use your budget.  It is not that much more expensive to use it all the way to the ceiling and makes a huge impact!  You can see it goes up to our crown molding and around our door frames.  We used Mapei grout in the color rain.  It is a very light grey.

BUTLERS PANTRY:

We did the same thing with the 3×6 glossy white ceramic subway tile in our butlers pantry.  We took it all the way to the ceiling and around the door frame and windows.  On the floor we did a fun historic pattern.  We used classic 1″ black and white hex tile in a matte finish with a 1″ black and white square pattern as a border.  We had considered doing a word or something in the floor, but decided to go with just the pattern and I am so glad we did.  I didn’t want it to be too busy.  We will be adding gingham wallpaper to the ceiling to tie it all together.

LAUNDRY ROOM:

This is another room where we took the 3×6 glossy white ceramic subway tile all the way up the wall.   I also wanted to do something fun on the floor in this room, however wanted to keep it classic.  We just used 8×8 grey, black and white tile in a fun pattern.  I will say as simple as that sounds it took me a long time to find the perfect colors!  I wanted the light grey to be very light.  Many of the options were really dark and it had a more modern look.  I searched high and low and my builder helped me find the perfect one.  We used Natural Hues 8×8 matte ceramic tile in Mist, Black and Pearl White with Mapei grout in the color rain.

GUEST BATH:

This room we used the same subway tile, but elevated it by adding different liners and patterns.  The shower is trimmed in bullnose subway tile so it has a nice edge.  This tile looks like crown molding and we did it about 1/3 up the wall and then did a pencil liner box on each wall. The grout in here Mapei is Silver.  It is a little darker than rain and I wish we would have done rain so it was a little softer.  It is a pretty color, just a little darker.  We used 1″ Cararra Marble matte hexagon tile on the floor.

POOL BATH:

I love bathrooms, because you can do something a little fun and different in these rooms.  This is our pool bath that will eventually have a gorgeous green wallpaper on the walls.  I wanted it to feel vintage so we carried glossy white subway tile 1/3 of the way up the wall and added a black pencil liner with trim.  Then we did a vintage pattern border on the floor with classic 1″ black and white matte hexagon tiles.  The grout in here Mapei is Silver

BRADEN’S BATH:

We kept the kids bath’s very simple and timeless.  We used surprise surprise. . . 3×6 glossy white ceramic subway tile in the showers and then just plain white 1″ matte hex tile on the floor.  The grout in here Mapei is Silver

AVERY’S BATH:

Avery’s bath is very similar to Braden’s except she has a tub so we did bullnose trim around her shower.

PRIMARY BATH:

I wanted our bathroom to feel like a high end spa.  We did 4×12 honed Carrara Marble tile in our shower on the walls and then 1″ Carrara marble honed hexagon tile on the floors. The grout in here Mapei is Silver. We used a really fun yet classic tile on the floor that I absolutely LOVE.  It is Carrara Marble and a robin egg blueish color marble and it is one of my absolute favorites.   The tile is called Turner Victoria.  It got it at The Tile Shop and worked with Michelle Ibanez-Huertas.  Her email is Michelle.Ibanez-Huertas@tileshop.com.  She can help you anywhere in the US.  I really enjoyed working with her.

PRIMARY BEDROOM:

We used Carrara Marble matte herringbone tile around our fireplace with a Carrara Marble pencil liner trim around the firebox.

This little nook is the entry into our primary bedroom, and it is very functional. I designed a full wall of built-ins to store extra bedding and have an easy place to tuck away throw pillows when the bed isn’t made.

When we were building, we really tried to think through how we actually live—creating a place for everything so staying organized is easy.

✨REMODEL UPDATE: PRIMARY BEDROOM✨

This room got a full facelift. 1st thing…the tile needed to go. I’m not a fan of tile in a bedroom. We carried the wood floor throughout & that alone made a HUGE difference.
Next we updated the doors and added some applied picture molding to the walls. This is an inexpensive way to really elevate a space. A lot of times people don’t know what to do with blank walls so they fill them with art. I wish I had a good before picture of this room before we took everything off the walls. There were so many mix matched art pieces with sayings, etc. to fill the space. Sometimes less is definitely more and trim finishes a space while simplifying it.
Lastly we just updated the decor. We found all the furniture on Facebook Marketplace.
We also removed a bunch of furniture from this room.
One major theme in this entire home remodel was less is more.

🌴SPRING BREAK🌴
We headed to LA for the 1st part of Spring Break & had so much fun.
•the Oscars were Sunday so we had to go down & check out the set up the day before. Fun to see the red carpet in person.
•spent a day at Universal Studios
•enjoyed Santa Monica, the pier, the beach, 3rd st promenade
•explored Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive, Melrose, the Grove, Sunset, Hollywood, Taylor Swifts house…we packed a lot in
•got to see a taping of America’s Got Talent. It was so much fun seeing the acts live, hearing the judges feedback & we even saw 1 person get a golden ticket!! The show will air in June, but will be a fun season to watch.

It was a great trip & we still have several more days to enjoy the break at home!

✨REMODEL UPDATE: POWDER BATH✨

This bath got a huge cosmetic update & reconfiguration.
It had a very awkward angle in the corner that kind of threw off the space. We disguised it with custom cabinetry and a faux panel. This added useful storage, design & now you’d never know there was a strange angle.

Some fun wallpaper, paint, counter details, hardware & sconces finished off this great space.

Now functional & beautiful.
