It has been awhile since I painted any furniture and I have missed it. With Braden being a baby it was hard to get blocks of time, but I am back! I found this amazing cabinet with great bones, but it needed a little farmhouse love. Today I am sharing all the details on this farmhouse cabinet makeover.
I was super inspired by a china cabinet makeover that Nikki Grandy did awhile back. When I found this cabinet I knew I had to try out the grain sack back. I am so in love with the way it turned out!
Here is what she looked like when I got her…cute bones, but very traditional. I wanted to give her a farmhouse makeover.
We started off removing the hardware and the top of the cabinet. Then we removed the doors to make it easier to paint. Sorry, I did a terrible job at taking pictures during the process! We painted it in a beautiful grey color called Steel Wool by Benjamin Moore in flat. The interior was painted in Flat Ultra White by Valspar. After the inside was dry I used painters tape to tape off the stripes and then filled them in with the Steel Wool. I used my favorite sander to distress the stripes and the cabinet after everything was dry. This is my favorite sandpaper and I used 220 grit on the inside for light distressing and I used 80 grit on the cabinet to distress the edges.
I wanted to give her a more industrial look so I changed the hardware to card catalog label pulls. You can find them HERE and HERE. I love this hardware because it is adorable and cheap! Around $0.60!!! Then I added vintage number labels to the pulls for a little extra character.
I love a cabinet full of white dishes so I had fun staging this one!

Did you sand the cabinet first? I know you mentioned a BM paint but which formula did you use? and did you prime? I just inherited a piece that looks a lot like this and taking off the top piece looks like a very good idea. Mine is a secretary that opens. I have wanted to paint it grey and was going to use the annie sloan grey paint because I wouldn’t have to sand… but the color is too dark. this color looks great but wonder if I use BM if I have to strip and sand?? Thanks!

I lightly sanded it and used BM Regal Select in Matte. It has a primer in it. It is a really thick paint with great coverage. I do love Annie Sloan paint but I had this paint already. If you give your piece a light sanding and then use this paint it should work great. Good luck! Sounds like a beautiful piece.
