Hi friends! I had shared a while back that we got Avery the Gabb phone for her Elementary School graduation gift. Yall, had tons of questions about it, but I wanted to wait until we had used it a few months before I gave my feedback. We have been using it a few months now, so I wanted to report back! Also, I have a $30 savings code at the bottom!!
A little history . . . cell phones and kids is a very hot topic with lots of opinions. This is a very personal choice for each family. For our family we feel strongly about avoiding social media for as long as we can. We joked that Avery wouldn’t get a cell phone until she was in high school. I don’t honestly know when we will give her access to social media, but I do know that it is not now.
As she has gotten older she is at more and more activities without me where I would like her to have phone access. For example, she does acting and sometimes she gets out early. I don’t like that she has to borrow others phones. I want her to have the independence to call me or text me herself and let me know. She also does more spend the nights now. I want her to have a phone to get in touch with me if she needs me. All this being said I started doing research and discovered the Gabb Phone.
The Gabb Phone has been the perfect solution for our family during this phase of life. Avery is so excited to have a phone. Here are the reasons we love it:
- WE CAN CALL HER/TEXT HER: LOVE THIS. It is so much fun to text her during the day when she is away and I love that we can get ahold of her. Makes me feel much safer being able to communicate with her.
- NO INTERNET ACCESS: The Gabb phone has zero internet access. We researched iPods, etc but all of those could use WiFi. Gabb does not.
- NO SOCIAL MEDIA APPS: The only apps on the phone are useful like calendar, flashlight, phone, text, clock, camera.
- NO GAMES: I love that there are no game distractions with the phone.
- CANNOT TEXT PHOTOS: She can text people, but no photos. While it would be fun to send your friends a silly selfie here and there I am willing to give that up so nothing inappropriate is sent over. (there is a plan where you can group text and text photos)
- TAKE PHOTOS: Avery loves this feature. She loves being able to take fun photos on her phone, edit them, etc. The phone has fun frames, filters, etc that she has a lot of fun with.
- IT HAS GPS: I love that I can track her on my phone if I ever needed to.
- LOOKS LIKE AN IPHONE: Avery thinks it looks cool and her friends cannot tell she doesn’t have an iPhone. It has a cute cover you can buy to personalize it, etc. This was not our biggest concerns, however, it is a nice plus.
All in all it allows her to communicate with family and friends via calls/text, it allows us to see where she is via GPS, it protects her from stumbling on adult stuff on the internet, cyber bullying, getting texted inappropriate photos, and the lack of games/apps helps her get off her phone and spend time doing other things. She has a phone for needs, not entertainment.
Gabb is on its own network. The phone costs $99, but you can save $30 with my code making it $69. There are 2 plans available.
- $19.99 a month: Text only messages
- $24.99 a month: You can text images and do group text
We chose the $19.99 a month plan. At age 9 we didn’t need group text or image text.

One question I got was if you can download music. You cannot, but you do have radio access which she enjoys. Again, this is her first phone. She is just so excited to have one. She understands it is not the same as an iPhone, but that wasn’t in the cards for her at this point so it really isn’t an apples to apples comparison.
I honestly cannot say enough about the Gabb Phone. It is the perfect solution for us right now. With Avery about to start Intermediate school, the timing was perfect. I am so grateful there is an option out there like the Gabb Phone that allows you to communicate with your kids, without all the other complications of internet and social media. I highly suggest considering it for your family. There are zero contracts, free shipping and a 30 day money back guarantee. We are so happy to have found Gabb!
Please let me know if you have any questions. I love sharing solutions we have found for our family in case it will help you too!

Hi Elaine, thanks for sharing this, it looks exactly like what we’ve been looking for. When I use your link it’s telling me the code is expired. Is there maybe a new code you have? Thank you

Can you call 911. We have a special needs child and this has been a problem??!

Hi Jayme- You are able to call 911 from it. I am not sure if there is an option to block certain numbers? You might want to reach out to Gabb directly and ask them. So sorry, wish I was more helpful!

The Z2 does have a music app that allows you to download songs to the phone. My 12yo has this phone. She used to have the Z1 but we upgraded her to the Z2 so she could have a playlist of songs she liked.
