So much of a home comes down to the special details. It takes extra work to get these right, but it is so worth it. It adds to the charm of the home and elevates it from a cookie cutter home, to a custom home. It doesn’t matter the size or cost of the house…several of these are things you can do in any home, they just need to be thought of. Here are some special details we added to our home.
Some of these special details don’t cost any extra money and some are minimal extra charges, but make a huge impact! Definitely worth the investment!
FLOOR TRANSITIONS:
When doing wood floors the direction of the wood can really add to the feel of the home. We were very intentional with room breaks and changing the direction of the wood at each entry. It gives a cozy, older home feel. This is something you need to tell your flooring guys when they are laying the floors. You can see these transitions in my photos.
BRICK DETAILS:
When you brick is being laid be sure to think about how you want it. Horizontal, vertical, herringbone, etc. Typically there is no extra charge for this. They have the material, it just depends on how you want it laid out. If they have to do a bunch of extra cutting or something there may be a charge, but typically it is minimal. For example on our outdoor fireplace, I wanted to add some detail to make it more interesting. I searched Pinterest for some inspiration and this is what we came up with. It just adds something extra vs a plain straight brick fireplace. I will also be adding some detail on our walkways, etc, but they haven’t been completed yet to share.
APPLIED MOLDING:
I shared all the details about the trim in our home HERE, but applied molding is one of the ways to get the “look for less”. It is an easy process, that is not a huge expense and adds a big impact. You just apply picture molding directly to your walls. This takes minimal material/labor, but really elevates a space. We did this technique in our office and primary bedroom.
BASEBOARDS:
Taller more substantial baseboards add a lot to your home. One way to do this and save money is use a larger piece of MDF and then add a small trim piece to the top. This give you the look of a large solid baseboard at a fraction of the price.
FIREPLACE DESIGN/TRIM DETAILS:
Details, details, details!! The fireplace is a great place to add extra and make it more special. I bought this tiny strip of dental molding from Home Depot for like $25 and had the trim guys add it to the design they had. There are lots of styles to choose from, but again, this extra layer makes it look different from every other home you see and barely cost me anything!
CORBELS:
Thinking of areas you can add extra details is important. Cabinetry is a great spot for this. Add a simple corbel under cabinet openings to give it a little something extra!
I hope this helped give you some ideas on how you can elevate your own home with some special detail ideas.
