I always say the bones of the house are so important. Flooring adds so much to a space. We used wood, brick, tile, marble, carpet and vinyl flooring in our home. The trick is picking things that add interest and design, but flow well together. Here are all of our flooring selections in 1 spot for your reference.
WOOD FLOORS:
Wood floors are a must in my opinion. There are many good engineered options and faux options out there, but in my mind, nothing beats the real deal. If you want your home to feel older and like it has been around a long time, the feel and creaks and character of real wood cannot be duplicated. We did wood floors through a large portion of our home. We changed it up and added interest with transitions and patterns. Overall though I wanted a classic, timeless look. You can read all about our wood floors HERE and about the stain color HERE.
TILE:
We used a variety of tile designs in our home. I like using tile in smaller/wet spaces like bathrooms, laundry rooms, etc. We also used it in our butlers pantry to give a vintage feel. We used a variety of patterns and material such as ceramic & marble, but all of it flows together. You have to be careful not to make things too choppy. Read all about our TILE HERE.
BRICK:
Brick is a fun way to add a lot of texture to your home and make it feel older. We used brick in our front entry way and our back entry/mudroom. I love the way it turned out. It is charming and very practical in these 2 areas. We also used it on our front porches and breezeway. All BRICK DETAILS HERE.
CARPET:
We used carpet in the kids bedrooms, the guest bedroom and our primary closet. I love the look of wood in these room, but really enjoy the coziness of carpet. I went with a low pile carpet so I could layer area rugs over them. I LOVE the look of my carpet, but I will tell you after living with it for a couple months it kinda shows everything on it. Not sure that I am 100% in love with it for that reason. We went with Anderson Tuftex Dynasty carpet. I did Home Plate in all of the rooms except Bradens. I went a little darker in his room. We did Winter Light in there. It gets an A+ for looks and a B- for showing so much junk on the floor.
VINYL:
I didn’t want the typical rubber floor in our workout room. I wanted it to be pretty and a place I wanted to spend my time. I need all the help I can get convincing me to work out. A pretty room helps that. Having said that, we also needed something practical because we are using weights in there, etc. We ended up going with the floor you see in a cafeteria. . . 12×12 vinyl tile. It is durable and very inexpensive. We did light grey and white in a diamond pattern. I love the way it turned out. You could do this with any color.
BLUESTONE:
Using real Pennsylvania Blue Stone was a must for me. It is used everywhere in the North East and it was the perfect material for our style of home. You don’t typically see Bluestone used in Texas, but it was a non negotiable on my list. We went with Natural Cleft Pennsylvania Blue Bluestone from Sandy Neck Stone. I didn’t want much color variety and I wanted it cut in squares, not organic. It really made this space for me. I love natural products. They all tell their own story and instantly give your home character.
CEMENT PAVERS:
We used 24×24 concrete pavers in our courtyard. I repeated the diamond patterns we used in the workout room. It is classic and elevates the space. I have also seen this look done in limestone/granite, but this was a much more cost effective alternative and I love the way it looks.
That wraps up all the flooring selections we used in our home. For more info about OUR NEW HOME click HERE. I share all the details and sources.
