NEW HOUSE: ROOF DETAILS

I have been getting a lot of questions on our roof so here are all the details!

It was my dream to have a real cedar shake roof, but unfortunately where we live it is very hard to get them approved.  They can be a fire hazard in our climate so insurance, etc is a nightmare.  They are also very expensive.  All that being said we went a different direction.  

We ended up going with a standard shingle, but I didn’t want it too dark, too light or too busy.  A lot of roofs out there are too busy for my taste and have blue in them.  We need a roof, but I wanted it to blend, not be something you looked at.   Just needed to blend and carry your eyes to other design details on our house.

We chose Owens Corning Oakridge in color Estate Grey for our shingles.  To add some extra interest we added metal roof over our pop outs and on our cupola.  I like the mixture of the textures.  The metal we chose is called Slate.  It is a great neutral color that is not too brown, not too grey.

I love the way our garage turned out.  It’s a carriage garage attached to our home with a breezeway and we put a cupola on top!  I think cupola’s are so charming and I am so excited to have one.  We will be adding metal roofing on top of the cupola to tie everything together.  You can’t have a cupola without an adorable weathervane right?!  There are lots of options out there, but I thought this horse one was classic. 

Let me know if you have any other questions.  I really like the way everything came together, but would still love if we would have been able to put on a cedar shake roof.  There is just no substitution in my mind!
