Summer Essentials: Beauty & More

June 18, 2018 By houseofhargrove@gmail.com

I LOVE Summer.  The pool, the beach, traveling. . .so much fun, but it takes a tole on my hair and skin.  I like products that protect, are easy, and work fast to fix my dehydrated skin and hair!!  During the summer months there are several summer essentials I cannot live without!!!  These are my tried and true, go to items and you need to know about them too!

Summer Essentials

  1. MOROCCAN OIL:  This oil is amazing and completely transforms my hair.  At first the thought of putting oil on my hair sounded awful, but NO!  It is amazing.  I rub it through my hair after I shower or when I get out of the pool.  It moisturizes without making hair greasy, smooths frizz and makes your hair so shiny.  I carry the travel size in my pool bag at all times.  It also smells amazing.  They make a light version, but I use the regular one.  Check out the reviews!!
  2. SUPERGOOP EVERYDAY SUNSCREEN SPF 50:  You will see from this list I LOVE Supergoop.  It is the best sunscreen I have used, but it is more like a beauty product than a traditional sunscreen.  This is the one I wear on my body and it works so well.  It has a great feel, really protects my skin from the sun.  It is oil free, water resistant, dries fast and doesn’t clog pores.  They make a large size which is awesome to keep poolside so you always have it handy!  Check out the reviews on all Supergoop products too!
  3. SUPERGOOP CC CREAM:  I have shared this before, but WOW.  It is the best CC cream.  It gives coverage, but is very light weight and lasts all day.  It has SPF 35.  I wear Light/Medium.  Truly makes skin look flawless while protecting it from the sun.
  4. KOPARI COCONUT MELT:  I discovered this product this year and it is ah-mazing!  You can use it for everything.  I use it all over my body for a moisturizer, I put it on my feet with socks at night to keep them super soft, I use it on my cuticles, as a hair mask and to shave my legs.  It is the universal product and smells delicious.  I cannot believe how great this product works.  It can even take off your make-up!
  5. KOPARI COCONUT ROSE TONER: This smells so good I want to eat it!  I love that it is a spray so it is super easy.  I use it all day long.  Anytime my face needs a little pick me up.  It sets my make up, is cooling, makes me feel refreshed.  You can use it as your main skincare, but my favorite way to use it is as a refresher.  I spray it after working out, when I am at the pool, after the shower, etc.  Feels amazing. . .and did I mention the smell 😉
  6. ESSIE POLISH:  “Your Fuchsia Looks Bright”.  I love all the color names.  This is from the Summer 2018 collection and it is a really fun pink color.  I like to wear it on my toes.
  7. TORY BURCH FLIP FLOPS:  I live in these.  Like really live in them.  They are classic, comfy, last forever can be dressed up or down and I will always have these in my closet!
  8. FRESH BROWN SUGAR BODY POLISH:  This makes my skin feel like newborn skin!  I live in the pool in the summer and my skin gets flaky and dehydrated and this polishes it right up.  It smooths everything out, removes dead skin and moisturizes it.  This product is addicting.  Use all over, but I love it on my legs, feet and elbows!!  I love the scent and you smell so good all day after using it!
  9. CORKCICLE WINE TUMBLER:  Ok, ladies.  This is a must!  I love my wine, but I love it cold!  During the summer months this tumbler keeps your wine cold for hours and has a lid so you can drink in the pool and not worry about getting pool water in your wine!  This is the perfect summer hostess gift!  I bought one for my friend who just built a pool.  I have been using this cup more often than I should admit 😉
  10. LIVING PROOF DRY SHAMPOO: I hate washing my hair!  This product was sent from heaven above!  It makes my hair feel and smell clean without having to wash it.  I use it multiple times a day, especially in the summer because it is hot and I sweat.  Even on the day I wash my hair I like to add this to absorb any oil and sweat.  That sounds gross, but this product is a game changer!!
  11. SELF TANNER MITT:  This goes with #13 below.  It is a mitt that you use to apply your tanner so it goes on evenly and doesn’t turn your hands orange.  It is a must with any self tanner.  If you have another brand you love, you still need this mitt.  You can use it with any self tanner, but I am sharing my favorite below.
  12. UNSEEN SUNSCREEN SPF 40:  This product is magic.  I use it as a foundation primer before I put on my CC cream and it fills in pores and wrinkles and makes me look airbrushed.  I want to personally thank the person who invented this product.  It also has SPF 40 so it protects your skin just like a typical sunscreen, but has added benefits.  You need to buy multiple of this.  Keep one in your bathroom and one in your bag.  The most amazing sunscreen ever!!
  13. ST. TROPEZ SELF TANNER:  This is the easiest self tanner I have ever used.  It is quick, easy, streak free, dries quickly, leaves an amazing brown color (no orange) and smells good.  This Express version works so fast you can leave on 1 hour for a light glow and 3 hours for a deeper bronze.  Once you try this self tanner you will never go back.  I am very fair so I don’t tan in the sun.  I wear tons of sunscreen and then I fake it with this awesome tanner!

When designing our home I pulled inspiration from all over! Pinterest, Instagram, magazine, design books, etc. we had this long spot in our front entry that we were trying to figure out and when I saw this image (swipe to see) in @gilschaferthearchitect ‘s book it stopped me in my tracks. I loved the use of transoms and designated spaces. My architect @josephpaulhomes & his wife Michelle helped pull the whole look together. So happy with how it turned out.

My grandfather owned a grocery store in New Jersey. The scale hanging from the ceiling in our butler’s pantry was the scale in his store. My uncle had it for the longest time & gifted it to me when we moved into this home. I love it so much!! My mom has the cash register he used in his store in her home. I love decorating with items that have meaning & that tell a story.

I love hallways & nooks. They are a great way to add interest to your home. Natural light & details are key. This space connects our hearth room to the gameroom. The Dutch door goes out to our courtyard, the room at the end is my office and the door to the left (just out of the photo) goes to the pool bath. Lots going on in this space.
I saw this floor pattern in a design book & had to have it somewhere in our home. I love it so much!

Bathrooms are such a fun space to make bold choices. They are small so every decision & detail makes a big impact. Still in love with this wallpaper from @wallpapersgalore_

✨REMODEL UPDATE: FAMILY ROOM✨

This family room had good bones, but we needed to declutter , maximize storage, update furnishings & make the space more functional.

There was a wall of shelves that was just too much. We purged and decorated with items that she loved & had sentimental value. So many homes are built with tons of open shelving and you have to be really careful in these spaces because they can become a spot for clutter instead of being intentional.
•added cabinet doors to 2 sections of shelves for some much-needed hidden storage.
•utilized the shelving that was separate from the other ones to make a designated bar space that is intentional and great for entertaining.
•found an gorgeous antique bar back to go against the wall that again is used as a bar when they entertain. Previously, it was a huge bench that took up width, but added no height to the wall. This is a major focal point in this space so we made it both functional and beautiful.
• I am not a huge fan of sectional couches unless they are in very specific areas. I think sometimes when people have a big room, they look for a big furniture to take up the space but it doesn’t actually give you the most seating and the spacing is sometimes awkward. They still really wanted a leather couch in there so we kept that, but then used more tailored chairs to frame the space.
• found this gorgeous coffee table on Facebook marketplace. Such a find!
•Removed the huge windmill fan that really took away from the gorgeous architecture of the ceiling with the beams.
•filled in dead space with functional furniture, like a cute table perfect for game night.
•scaled back the TV so it made more sense over the fireplace and went with a frame one so there could be pretty art up there as it is a main focal point. (Art was off in this photo, but typically it looks like a vintage painting)

So excited with how this space turned out. It’s lighter, brighter, more functional & a better use of space. They have walls of windows along the back of the house with a beautiful view and now you’re able to focus on that more.

✨REMODEL UPDATE: DAUGHTER’S BATHROOM ✨

Throughout this remodel you will see two constant goals…brighten up the spaces & add functional storage. This bathroom was dark & dated. We took everything out and had a fresh start.

•New paint, wallpaper, tile, fixtures, lighting, etc.
•Raised the height of the counters & some additional cabinetry extending up to the ceiling for much needed storage.
•Added cute details to the side of the counters
•Removed the tub & added a glass door to the shower to make the space feel bigger & more open.

This sweet girl has brought us so much joy! We are “foster failures” & couldn’t be happier about it. Callie has been the best addition to our family.
Chat GPT made this cute art from our Christmas picture of her. She was living her best life with all the ribbon from the presents.

I love a mudroom! I don’t care what size house I live in from here on out I’ll always have some “mudroom” space…even if it’s a tiny little spot. It’s so great to have a drop zone to keep organized. This space got lots of use during our ice storm with all the wet shoes, etc & these brick floors were great!!

Feels strange getting back to work this week. We’ve been living in PJs and been asking what day it was for about a week now. Snowmageddon 2026 was fun & we still have piles of ice on the ground….BUT nice to go back to a bit of a routine. January felt like 47 days 🤪
