Texas Blizzard

February 22, 2021 By houseofhargrove@gmail.com

If you know anyone in Texas (or even if you don’t) I am sure you have heard all about the crazy weather we got last week.  I have lived in TX my entire life and never seen weather like this. I had to recap the Texas Blizzard of 2021 so I would have it to look back on.

We are checking out our lot in all the snow on Valentine’s Day

Let me start by saying we got so lucky.  I have never been more glad to be in a rental house without a pool.  Yes, we had rolling power that was on/off every 30 minutes, but we stayed warm, didn’t have any damage, etc.  Others did not have the same experience and my heart and prayers go out to them.  There will be a lot of people in Texas recovering from this storm for awhile.  We are just not equipped to handle this type of weather here.

My kids thought it was the best thing ever.  School was cancelled for the week and due to rolling power they weren’t even virtual. . .it was just cancelled.  We tried to make the most of it and get out and enjoy ALL THE SNOW!  I told them, they may never see snow like this again in Texas during their lifetime.  The last time TX had negative weather was in 1930!  We got to -2 degrees here and the windchill was around -14!!

The amazing people who own our farmhouse had ski clothes and sleds from when their kids were younger.  They loaned them to us and it was awesome!  Our little knit gloves just weren’t cutting it.  We built snowman, had snowball fights, went sledding, did all the things to soak in this crazy experience.

All plans were cancelled, restaurants closed, roads empty.  It looked like a ghost town around here.  Very much like around this time last year when the pandemic hit!

Seriously, in the last 12 calendar months we have lived through things that have never happened before.  Such a crazy time in life. I am ready to hear less of “unprecedented times”.

This was the first day we got snow.  We thought that was a lot, but then we got so much more.

Everything was so beautiful.

We went and checked on our animal friends . . .

We took lots of pictures and then would run inside to thaw out!

We learned how to get creative without power.  I even heated mashed potatoes in a skillet . . . that was a first!  When the power was on every 30 minutes we were running around like crazy people to get things done.  Work, drying hair, drying wet clothes, etc. I know it seems obvious, but you forget how everything is run by electricity!  Geoff and I have a bed that raises and the first night we were in bed, with it raised, watching a movie and the power went off.  OOPS . . .we couldn’t get it to go back down so we had to sleep basically sitting up!  Power came back on around 2 am and we quickly lowered it.  We learned our lesson there!  This was basically us . . .

The roads really weren’t too bad.  There was lots of snow, but no ice.  We got out for a bit to check on our lot which is just around the corner.

Like I said before, our family was very lucky and although there were some inconveniences, we had fun making lots of memories during the Texas blizzard.

The memes were so funny. . .and so true!

Now that the storm has passed I know lots of people have extensive damage to take care of.  Sending prayers to everyone affected in a negative way by this storm.  I am hoping that most reading this were able to enjoy the snow and didn’t suffer from it.

    Hi there!

So glad you guys are okay. I haven’t been on Instagram a lot and probably missed your post. Your memes are hilarious but heartfelt.

We are living through too many historical events at once. May we all see light and peace at the end of the tunnel.

Sending well wishes to you and your family.

I’m glad your family was able to enjoy the snow and be able to have a taste of what New England is like in the winter. It looks like you guys had a lot of fun!
Hopefully the rest of the year gets less severe with its weather and other things.
I don’t think people can take much more extreme conditions thrown at them.

Thank you so much. Yes, my family is from NJ and Maine so they always laugh at TX winters. This year was pretty crazy!

    Hi Elaine,
Here in Pennsylvania, we get snow all the time. Last year not so much. Sure made up for it this year. We still have piles of snow about two feet high. And it’s been so cold, it doesn’t melt as fast.
Your state was really hammered. My prayers for all the people in Texas who lost power and no water and so much damage to their homes. God Bless them all.

When designing our home the kitchen was such an important space. We spend a lot of time in there. I wanted it to be beautiful and functional. Here are some of my favorite features in our kitchen.

I’ve been on the hunt for faux flowers for my outdoor pots and I finally found a winner!!

🌸 comment SHOP and I’ll send you the links

I kept spending lots of money each season on real flowers and it was so much work keeping them alive!

I was looking for a better option and finally found one!

These faux flowers are
•BEAUTIFUL ....always in bloom
•ZERO MAINTENANCE ...no watering, fertilizing, etc
•BUDGET FRIENDLY ...these are priced great and you don’t have to replace them each season
•AND LOOK REAL. Some faux flowers are bad!! These really look good and unless you dig in there you’d never know they are faux

Each pack comes in a bundle of 2 bunches. Each bunch has 7 stems. You can plant 2 ways and I tried both. You can plant the bundle attached together and bend the stems (they are wired) to spread everything out....or....you can cut the bundles apart and plant the stems individually. I ended up doing that and thought they looked more realistic that way. I ended up using 5 packages (10 bunches) for 2 large pots and 1 smaller pot.

I share both ways on IG stories so you can see the difference.

I also removed some soil and added floral foam blocks beneath, recovered with dirt and stuck the flowers in them. I don’t think this step was necessary, but I wanted to make sure they were in there firm.

I’m so excited I now get to enjoy beautiful flowers with zero work 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Last year, Geoff and I added wires up this wall in a diamond trellis pattern. We planted creeping fig, but unfortunately, it all died this winter. I just planted Star Jasmine in its place so really hoping it survives. Texas weather is hard!. Thanks to a little AI magic I was able to create what my ultimate vision is. Fingers crossed it will look like this in a couple of years.

Yall I recently discovered you could make fun art on ChatGPT using your own images for free! @ciarakenaston inspired me with her Beatrix Potter images and I did a deep dive and found you can do so many cool things!

🩵 Download ChatGPT if you haven’t already and have fun!

Upload an image. Can be of your home, your family, etc and then type in prompts to have it alter your image. You can play around with it and try all kinds of things but here were my prompts for the video

1. Beatrix Potter inspired illustration
2. Jan Brett inspired illustration
3. Vintage oil painting
4. E.H. Shepard inspired illustration
5. Retro British cottage core style

If you do some be sure to share and tag me. I’d love to see them. Endless possibilities!!
