The day is finally here. . .time to reveal Braden’s big boy bedroom. I am not going to lie, saying goodbye to his crib was hard. Unless we get a very big surprise in the future, we are done having babies so I am sure some of you can relate to this feeling. . .very bittersweet. How is it possible I have no more little babies?! (insert crying face here). Anyway, I knew a fun room makeover would cheer me up. Braden LOVES and I mean LOVES sports! He is happiest with a ball in his hands and literally sleeps with a football (a real one) many nights. When designing his room I knew I wanted to include sports stuff, but I didn’t want it to be overly themed. I wanted to design a beautiful room that could carry him through his teen years (with some tweaks) and add in elements that he loves. I am so excited to share with you Braden’s vintage industrial sports bedroom.
VINTAGE INDUSTRIAL SPORTS BEDROOM
Paint and molding make a HUGE transformation in any room and the minute I started dreaming about Braden’s new room I knew I wanted board & batten molding in crisp white with a dark grey paint above. I just love that fresh, classic look. There are lots of DIY tutorials online, but I hired someone to do this project. I shared some of the process on IG stories as well as the gray paint debate of 2018. Haha, gray paint is just sooo hard. Some go blue, some go brown, they look different in depending on the lighting, etc. I have made some gray paint mistakes in the past so I wanted to get this right. Yall, I am in LOVE with the paint I went with. It was exactly what I was looking for. I ended up choosing Benjamin Moore Gray (yes. . . just gray). It is the perfect charcoal and adds the richness I wanted. Back to the molding. . .one of the things I did a little differently was add a picture shelf one the wall above the bed. Since the molding was so high up the wall I thought it would look funny to hang art that high so I added a picture ledge so the art looks like it is leaning. It is leaning, but secured to the wall as well so Braden cannot pull it down. I think this makes it look more natural.
This vintage inspired bed is a beautiful rubbed bronze color that almost looks black. It has the vintage feel I wanted, but also feels industrial with the metal finish. I am so happy with it and the price is great!! These nightstands were perfect because they have the industrial metal base and the wood top adds warmth. These are a steal!! I got them on sale for less than $55 each!! Next moving onto the bedding. . .I love neutrals. I kept his room neutral, but added interest with different patterns, textures and materials. My favorite sheets are white flannel sheets! Then I use the pillows for mixing patterns. My plaid shams are all shades of grey and then the grain stripe lumbar pillow finishes the look. It is such amazing quality and custom made by WOVEN! If you need pillows. . .check them out! I found this football pillow at Ikea for $3.99. I didn’t see it online, but linked a similar one here. Then I got the duvet with matching shams for less than $50!! It is a beige chambray color with pin stripes on the other side.
One of the ways I wanted to add “sports” and “vintage” to the room was to incorporate old sports pictures of Braden’s dad and grandparents. I got these black and white frames at Ikea for amazing prices. Geoff’s mom saved a few newspaper clips of when Geoff’s soccer team made the paper! I LOVE them and couldn’t wait to frame them. I showed Braden and he asked what Newspaper was, haha!! I also included current sport pictures of Braden with his friend and my dad (PopPop).
I added more pictures on this nightstand too. Another newspaper clip, Geoff when he was playing soccer at age 7 (frame from Ikea) and then Braden with his Dad and Sister!
I wanted to do something unique for the art above his bed so I did these sports engineering prints (soccer, football, baseball). Each one was less than $25!! I will be sharing a tutorial soon! Wood frames are from Hobby Lobby.
I kept the rocking chair in the room because we still rock and read at night. Eventually that will leave the room.
I must say. . .one of the things I am most excited about in his room…the lighting. I am in LOVE with these lights. They came with a white shade and while I loved the white, it blended into the molding too much. I ended up spray painting them and will be doing a tutorial on that soon too! I got the lights at the amazing Antique Farmhouse. . . it is one of my go to’s for farmhouse finds at great prices. They are currently sold out so I linked the lights at another store above.
I used Edison bulbs on a dimmer so they put out a really nice glow!
I originally bought this antique postal desk to resell, but I fell in love with it and knew I had to keep it for Braden’s room. It has been sitting in our garage for almost a year. As he gets older he can fill the slots with his stuff, but for now I filled them with old baseballs. I got the large frame from Ikea and made my own art printable. I love this quote from Tim McGraw’s song so I made an engineer print and framed it. You can get an engineering print at Staples in pretty much any size for so inexpensive! This one was less than $5!! Here is a link to the printable! I share all of these projects on Instagram stories. I share my shopping tips, my DIYs, how to’s, etc. You can follow me here.
I had a fun time gathering sports stuff for on top of the postal piece. I went to half priced books to find sports books, found the trophy at AtHome, the B is from Hobby Lobby, and the football|helmet|basketball and baseballs are all from Play it Again Sports. That is a great place to get sports stuff for very inexpensive. Got that helmet for $5!
Originally I ordered a bunch of old baseballs on Ebay, but I didn’t get enough. Then I discovered Play it Again Sports and got the rest there. You can get dirty, old balls for $1.50!
Yall. . .this dresser is EVERYTHING!! I am in love with it!! It is huge, amazing quality and just so pretty. I really want one for my bedroom too! I got it from Birch Lane, but it is currently out of stock. They have lots of other beautiful pieces in all different styles! I LOVE this one! At the bottom of this post I linked all my sources so there are other similar options.
I looked all over for the perfect industrial mirror and found this one from Restoration Hardware Teen. It was exactly what I was looking for. Then I used 4 more Ikea frames with old sports pictures to give a gallery feel. The lamp is from Target.
So there it is! Braden has been sleeping in here about 2 weeks now and its been amazing. Thank you all for your sweet comments on social media as I was putting his room together. Hope you loved the big reveal and got some inspiration! I am so happy with the way it turned out and most importantly Braden loves it!!
