Why we don’t have a white kitchen

March 7, 2016 By houseofhargrove@gmail.com

One of the top things people comment/say to me are “what are your paint colors?”  and “I am surprised you don’t have a white kitchen” . It is so so true.  I LOVE white kitchens and am constantly sharing pictures of them.  Carerra Marble, Subway Tile, etc.  I dream about having one in a farmhouse someday.kitchenBeautiful kitchen from CedarHill Farmhouse

Well, here is a funny story about why we don’t have a white kitchen.

I love love my husband…truly I do however, he is not exactly Chip Gaines.  When we started dating….I was the one with a tool box ( I am not kidding…he didn’t even own a hammer??!!)  I am giving you a little back story before I tell you the rest.

When we built our current home I was pregnant with Avery and while I LOVE the look of hardwood floors in the kitchen I wasn’t sure how practical they were.  I told the builder I didn’t want wood floors due to my kids and my husband.  He kinda rolled his eyes at me for the husband part…but I was dead serious!

Personally if you are going to have white cabinets I think it looks best with wood floors.  Since we were not going to have wood floors I went with Travertine looking tile and then choose dark cabinets for contrast.  I do love my kitchen, but it is not my exact style.

Anyway, about a month after moving into our home I walk in the kitchen and it is completely flooded!!  I was freaking out and realized it was coming out of the dishwasher!  After stopping the flooding I immediately called our builder and said something must be wrong with our new dishwasher and explained what happened.  Repair guys came out, checked everything and all looked good.  I was so confused.  I had used the dishwasher probably 25 times at this point with no problem, but for some reason this day our kitchen flooded.

Fast forward about a month later….walk in to the kitchen and it is happening again.  It has been working fine all the rest of the time, but here we are again with water and soap shooting out EVERYWHERE!!!  Well, a light bulb went off!  Geoff (my sweet hubby) loaded the dishwasher again so it must have been something he did.  Sure enough he was putting DISH SOAP into the dishwasher instead of dishwashing detergent!!!!  This tells me 2 things.

  1. My husband needs to do the dishes more often (only 2 times in a few months!!)
  2. THIS IS WHY I KNEW WE COULDN’T HAVE WOOD FLOORS IN THE KITCHEN

I must interject that my husband is a smart guy.  HAHA.  This post makes him sound very un-intelligent.  I mean, dish soap…really!

Bottom line….I was right!  If we would have done wood floors in the kitchen they would have been ruined…TWICE!!  He has now learned his lesson and this will not happen again, but I mean can you imagine!

I wan’t joking when I said we needed tile due to my husband (and kids…although they have had no issues).

So for now….I very much appreciate my tile 🙂

I would love to hear your funny husband stories!!

We are currently building and went with dark cabinets too, I grew up in a farmhouse and while I LOVE the look it reminds me of dated looks if not done perfectly… I LOVE your story! We kept the decor look as you have as well, just dark wood accents. I have found your blog via your insta— thanks for the adorable story! : ) I don’t have a husband story to share yet has be hasn’t done anything shareable to date BUT if you were to ask him I bet he would have too many for the comment section about me! ; ) thanks again you’ve gained a new follower!

I , too, am the one who came to the marriage with the power tools. Didn’t do a wood floor I my last house but went with hand scraped floors this time so when they get wrecked, but not with water, it’s part of the look. Lol.
As for white cabinets, glad those before too and always having to touch up the chips and scrapes. Now they are dark wood like yours. It’s called ‘compromise’.
In 10 years white kitchens will be out of fashion again. It all goes through cycles.

I see auto correct did auto not correct.
‘I’ instead of ‘in’ and ‘glad’ instead of ‘had’.
Not sure how to correct in my post

      Haha…hello fellow tool owner 😉
Yes, I love hand scraped floors….any damage just adds “character”.
You are right…everything goes in and out! Have a great week

I love that your style can mix with this kitchen. It’s one of the reasons I started following you, well before you were insta-famous :). You have beautiful taste, and your kitchen stands out in a crowd. I, too, love a white kitchen, but you have proven a kitchen can be beautiful, and not white. Thanks for the inspiration!

Your husband and mine must be related! Really smart guy..but DIY challenged! Same reason I have tile floors, covered with pretty rugs, mostly cushion my legs, back and feet . BUT , I did paint all my kitchen cabinets white!! Love, love, love how bright and fresh it feels! We moved to this home in 1997 and I,too, had all dark, rich wood..thought I could never change. But this white is light and so airy and clean….yay, for me!!

When designing our home I pulled inspiration from all over! Pinterest, Instagram, magazine, design books, etc. we had this long spot in our front entry that we were trying to figure out and when I saw this image (swipe to see) in @gilschaferthearchitect ‘s book it stopped me in my tracks. I loved the use of transoms and designated spaces. My architect @josephpaulhomes & his wife Michelle helped pull the whole look together. So happy with how it turned out.

My grandfather owned a grocery store in New Jersey. The scale hanging from the ceiling in our butler’s pantry was the scale in his store. My uncle had it for the longest time & gifted it to me when we moved into this home. I love it so much!! My mom has the cash register he used in his store in her home. I love decorating with items that have meaning & that tell a story.

I love hallways & nooks. They are a great way to add interest to your home. Natural light & details are key. This space connects our hearth room to the gameroom. The Dutch door goes out to our courtyard, the room at the end is my office and the door to the left (just out of the photo) goes to the pool bath. Lots going on in this space.
I saw this floor pattern in a design book & had to have it somewhere in our home. I love it so much!

✨REMODEL UPDATE: FAMILY ROOM✨

This family room had good bones, but we needed to declutter , maximize storage, update furnishings & make the space more functional.

There was a wall of shelves that was just too much. We purged and decorated with items that she loved & had sentimental value. So many homes are built with tons of open shelving and you have to be really careful in these spaces because they can become a spot for clutter instead of being intentional.
•added cabinet doors to 2 sections of shelves for some much-needed hidden storage.
•utilized the shelving that was separate from the other ones to make a designated bar space that is intentional and great for entertaining.
•found an gorgeous antique bar back to go against the wall that again is used as a bar when they entertain. Previously, it was a huge bench that took up width, but added no height to the wall. This is a major focal point in this space so we made it both functional and beautiful.
• I am not a huge fan of sectional couches unless they are in very specific areas. I think sometimes when people have a big room, they look for a big furniture to take up the space but it doesn’t actually give you the most seating and the spacing is sometimes awkward. They still really wanted a leather couch in there so we kept that, but then used more tailored chairs to frame the space.
• found this gorgeous coffee table on Facebook marketplace. Such a find!
•Removed the huge windmill fan that really took away from the gorgeous architecture of the ceiling with the beams.
•filled in dead space with functional furniture, like a cute table perfect for game night.
•scaled back the TV so it made more sense over the fireplace and went with a frame one so there could be pretty art up there as it is a main focal point. (Art was off in this photo, but typically it looks like a vintage painting)

So excited with how this space turned out. It’s lighter, brighter, more functional & a better use of space. They have walls of windows along the back of the house with a beautiful view and now you’re able to focus on that more.

✨REMODEL UPDATE: DAUGHTER’S BATHROOM ✨

Throughout this remodel you will see two constant goals…brighten up the spaces & add functional storage. This bathroom was dark & dated. We took everything out and had a fresh start.

•New paint, wallpaper, tile, fixtures, lighting, etc.
•Raised the height of the counters & some additional cabinetry extending up to the ceiling for much needed storage.
•Added cute details to the side of the counters
•Removed the tub & added a glass door to the shower to make the space feel bigger & more open.

This sweet girl has brought us so much joy! We are “foster failures” & couldn’t be happier about it. Callie has been the best addition to our family.
Chat GPT made this cute art from our Christmas picture of her. She was living her best life with all the ribbon from the presents.

I love a mudroom! I don’t care what size house I live in from here on out I’ll always have some “mudroom” space…even if it’s a tiny little spot. It’s so great to have a drop zone to keep organized. This space got lots of use during our ice storm with all the wet shoes, etc & these brick floors were great!!

Feels strange getting back to work this week. We’ve been living in PJs and been asking what day it was for about a week now. Snowmageddon 2026 was fun & we still have piles of ice on the ground….BUT nice to go back to a bit of a routine. January felt like 47 days 🤪
