Friday Favorites-Austin & Waco edition

February 24, 2017 By houseofhargrove@gmail.com

I am linking up with Erika, Narci & Andrea to share my Friday Favorites!

AUSTIN/WACO

We had so much fun last weekend.  The kids had no school on Monday so we took them to my moms house for the long weekend and some Grammy time and Geoff and I headed off to Austin for a late Valentine’s get away.  Austin is one of my favorite cities.  I went to college at the University of Texas and just fell in love with the city.  Some of my best friends still live there so we had an amazing weekend catching up with them, sleeping in, eating too much and just spending quality time together!

On the way there we stopped in Waco to see the Magnolia Silos.  I have been dying to go and seriously cannot believe it took me this long to get there.  I had a trip planned a few times, but something always came up.  We stopped on our way to Austin on Saturday and literally stayed 30 minutes!  It was PACKED!!  Like, lines around every building and even if you got in there were so many people it was hard to see anything.  So….since we were driving back through Waco Monday on our way home, we decided to stop back by then.  This was definitely the right choice.  While it was President’s Day so still a bit crowded, it was nothing like Saturday!  I will be recapping the Silos and the Bakery next week.  There was so much good stuff they need their own post!

When we got to Austin on Saturday we actually went and saw a movie.  The cool thing about visiting Austin is I have lived there and we go pretty often so there is not pressure to get out and see everything.  We were able to just go and relax.  We were kid free and we love movies so it was a great time to get one in!  After the movie, we went to the hotel to freshen up and then went downtown and ate at 2nd Street Kitchen and Bar.   I love all the patios in Austin.  The weather was perfect so we just sat out there and did some great people watching!  That night we went to Esthers Follies and then walked 6th street.  WOW….trip down memory lane!  I spend quite a few nights there during my college years.  Funny to be back with my husband.

Sunday we met one of my best friends Jessica and her fiance for lunch at Hula Hut!  I have to go there if I am in Austin.  The food and the atmosphere is amazing.  It is right on the water in the middle of Austin and the queso and margaritas are delicious!  We will be headed back in May for Jessica and Craig’s wedding!  Cannot wait.  Sunday evening we had dinner with one of my other best friends Kendall and her amazing husband John.  Kendall and I have been best friends since 8th grade and I just could not love her more.  Every time we get together there is just not enough time to get everything in.   The are so so much fun to hang out with!  If you go to Austin you have to check out their cheese shop Antonelli’s in Hyde Park.  It is delicious.  I promise you will thank me later.   After dinner we went back to the room and went to bed early.  We also slept in.  It was amazing!  This trip was definitely one of my favorites!

(Jessica and Kendall were both my bridesmaids.  They are on the right side of the pic.  Kendall (top), Jess (bottom))

CLEANSE

I did a 3 day cleanse this week.  Tuesday-Thursday and it being over is one of my favorites!  HAHA.  I have done it before and actually really love the way I feel from it, but this time I was just tired!  I wasn’t hungry….just ready for it to be over!  For anyone curious I did the lemon juice cleanse.  It is 2 quarts distilled water, 1.5 cups of pure lemon juice and 1/3-1/2 cup Maple Syrup B.  You drink that each day as well as 2 quarts of plain distilled water.  It sounds nasty, but honestly just tastes like tart lemonade.  I feel so good afterwards, my skin is glowing and it really helps fight cravings!  I am typing this on my last day and I am craving chicken and broccoli??!!!  Normally I crave pizza!

OSCARS

I am so excited for the Oscars this weekend.  I absolutely love watching them and seeing all the pretty fashion!  I have been trying to catch up on lots of the movies nominated.  If you haven’t seen Hidden Figures….go see it!  WOW!  So so good.

NORDSTROM WINTER SALE

I love a good sale!  So many cute things at great prices.  Shop all SALE HERE.

Here are a few of my favorite finds (click photos to shop):

Hope you all have an amazing weekend!

I’ve been wanting to try a cleanse, I might have to try yours. Not sure I’ll have the strength to do it, LOL! Have a great weekend!

I have done this cleanse several times and I really do love it. If you space out the juice well throughout the day you really are not very hungry! You feel so good at the end and the scale looks nice too (some comes back when you eat but some does stay off). You can do it!! 🙂 Have a great weekend too!

Oh I want to go to the Silos but my friend just went on a Friday and she said it was crazy but they told her it’s insane on the weekends! You picked some good picks form the Nordstrom winter sale…I love that ruffle sweater for sure 😉 I would still get some good use out of it up here in the north too! xoxo ERIN

When designing our home I pulled inspiration from all over! Pinterest, Instagram, magazine, design books, etc. we had this long spot in our front entry that we were trying to figure out and when I saw this image (swipe to see) in @gilschaferthearchitect ‘s book it stopped me in my tracks. I loved the use of transoms and designated spaces. My architect @josephpaulhomes & his wife Michelle helped pull the whole look together. So happy with how it turned out.

My grandfather owned a grocery store in New Jersey. The scale hanging from the ceiling in our butler’s pantry was the scale in his store. My uncle had it for the longest time & gifted it to me when we moved into this home. I love it so much!! My mom has the cash register he used in his store in her home. I love decorating with items that have meaning & that tell a story.

I love hallways & nooks. They are a great way to add interest to your home. Natural light & details are key. This space connects our hearth room to the gameroom. The Dutch door goes out to our courtyard, the room at the end is my office and the door to the left (just out of the photo) goes to the pool bath. Lots going on in this space.
I saw this floor pattern in a design book & had to have it somewhere in our home. I love it so much!

Bathrooms are such a fun space to make bold choices. They are small so every decision & detail makes a big impact. Still in love with this wallpaper from @wallpapersgalore_

✨REMODEL UPDATE: FAMILY ROOM✨

This family room had good bones, but we needed to declutter , maximize storage, update furnishings & make the space more functional.

There was a wall of shelves that was just too much. We purged and decorated with items that she loved & had sentimental value. So many homes are built with tons of open shelving and you have to be really careful in these spaces because they can become a spot for clutter instead of being intentional.
•added cabinet doors to 2 sections of shelves for some much-needed hidden storage.
•utilized the shelving that was separate from the other ones to make a designated bar space that is intentional and great for entertaining.
•found an gorgeous antique bar back to go against the wall that again is used as a bar when they entertain. Previously, it was a huge bench that took up width, but added no height to the wall. This is a major focal point in this space so we made it both functional and beautiful.
• I am not a huge fan of sectional couches unless they are in very specific areas. I think sometimes when people have a big room, they look for a big furniture to take up the space but it doesn’t actually give you the most seating and the spacing is sometimes awkward. They still really wanted a leather couch in there so we kept that, but then used more tailored chairs to frame the space.
• found this gorgeous coffee table on Facebook marketplace. Such a find!
•Removed the huge windmill fan that really took away from the gorgeous architecture of the ceiling with the beams.
•filled in dead space with functional furniture, like a cute table perfect for game night.
•scaled back the TV so it made more sense over the fireplace and went with a frame one so there could be pretty art up there as it is a main focal point. (Art was off in this photo, but typically it looks like a vintage painting)

So excited with how this space turned out. It’s lighter, brighter, more functional & a better use of space. They have walls of windows along the back of the house with a beautiful view and now you’re able to focus on that more.

✨REMODEL UPDATE: DAUGHTER’S BATHROOM ✨

Throughout this remodel you will see two constant goals…brighten up the spaces & add functional storage. This bathroom was dark & dated. We took everything out and had a fresh start.

•New paint, wallpaper, tile, fixtures, lighting, etc.
•Raised the height of the counters & some additional cabinetry extending up to the ceiling for much needed storage.
•Added cute details to the side of the counters
•Removed the tub & added a glass door to the shower to make the space feel bigger & more open.

This sweet girl has brought us so much joy! We are “foster failures” & couldn’t be happier about it. Callie has been the best addition to our family.
Chat GPT made this cute art from our Christmas picture of her. She was living her best life with all the ribbon from the presents.

I love a mudroom! I don’t care what size house I live in from here on out I’ll always have some “mudroom” space…even if it’s a tiny little spot. It’s so great to have a drop zone to keep organized. This space got lots of use during our ice storm with all the wet shoes, etc & these brick floors were great!!

Feels strange getting back to work this week. We’ve been living in PJs and been asking what day it was for about a week now. Snowmageddon 2026 was fun & we still have piles of ice on the ground….BUT nice to go back to a bit of a routine. January felt like 47 days 🤪
