When we moved into our new home a few years ago I planned on using all my old curtains. I did not account for the fact that our new ceilings were much taller so all of our drapes were too short! This was not an expense I had planned for so I had to get creative. Today I will show you one of my tricks to make inexpensive custom curtains.
My office needed curtains, but I did not want to spend a lot of money. I wanted something fairly simple. I really liked these curtains from Ikea. They were white, semi sheer and had little knot details to give them some interest. The price was great at $19.99 for the pair. I needed really long curtains (which was not helping with my budget) and these were 98″…still a tad too short (I am telling you…my ceilings are tall!).
To add a little bit of length and give them a custom feel I added some of my favorite ribbon to the tabs at the top and tied them to the curtain rod. I could adjust the ribbon to any size I wanted so I was able to get my curtains the perfect length. The extra detail really made me fall in love with them!
Now I have long (104″) custom looking curtains for $22 a pair!! That is a steal!
I was able to complete all the curtains in my office for $45!!! ($19.99 curtains x 2, $4.50 ribbon).
It was exactly the look I was going for, simple…with charm!

This technique can be done on any drapes you find that you love…maybe you need length, maybe you just want extra detail or color. Please excuse this terrible photo, but in my daughters original nursery I added ribbon to the top of pinch pleat brown curtains to add some pink detail. Another inexpensive way to customize curtains is add a block of fabric to the bottom. Here my mom sewed this pink and white ruffle fabric to the bottom of store bought curtains.
If you have a room you have been putting off doing curtains in because you didn’t have the budget I hope this gave you some new ideas!

Wondering where you bought the curtain rods? They are not too thick and garrish.
I am looking for curtains which are semi sheer for two upstairs hallway windows.
Thanks

What length did you cut your ribbon?
