Kindergarten Kickoff Party

June 27, 2016 By houseofhargrove@gmail.com

It is so cliche to say that time just flies…but you know what…it does.  My sweet baby girl is starting Kindergarten this year.  I mean how is that even possible??!!  To celebrate we had a Kindergarten Kickoff party this weekend and it was soooo much fun.  If you have a child going into Kindergarten or will be going in the next few years you should totally do this.  Avery is so so excited.  Here are all the details!kindergarten kickoff (37)Here was the invitation I sent out…Kindergarten partyTypically I would have had this party in August before school started, but that is Avery’s birthday (the first day of school actually) and I will be out of town some that month so it was just too crazy to get it all together…also I can share this with yall now and you have time to get your own party together!  I have always loved school and school supplies!  Seriously…so how fun is a party where you decorate with lots of school supplies?!  Thanks to the Dollar Store and the Target Dollar Spot there was an endless supply of adorable things.  Right now Target is loaded with the cutest banners, binders, folders, stickers, vases, etc!  Go stock up!!

I started talking about the idea of a Kindergarten party almost 5 years ago when several of my friends and I had kids at the same time and realized they would all be going off to Kinder at the same time.  We laughed about having a “boo-hoo” brunch on the first day of school and a big party to celebrate….well crazy enough…we are here!

We had 6 friends over to the house and I turned my dining room into a class room!kindergarten kickoff (50)I had that old door chalkboard so I just wrote Class of 2029 on there.  I got clipboards at the Dollar store and made apple on graph paper art.  Then I made paper airplanes and hung them from the chandelier.  The Chalkboard banner was from the Target Dollar Spot and I wrote Kinder on it.  I covered the table with craft paper from the Dollar Store for Easy clean up.  The wooden caddy is one of my favorites.  I have several in our home and they are awesome for school supplies.

Dollar Tree: Red Plates, paper clips, crayons, jars, flashcards, pencil sharpeners, pencils, scissors, clipboards, craft paper

Target: Glue, name cards, letter flash cards, blocks,  ruler box holding apples, chalkboard banner

Notebook Paper Placemats (scrapbook paper): Hobby Lobby

Metal Stand: Curtis Creation

Dollar Tree: Supplies, apple/pencil file folderskindergarten kickoff (23) kindergarten kickoff (42) kindergarten kickoff (54) kindergarten kickoff (41)  kindergarten kickoff (29) kindergarten kickoff (28) kindergarten kickoff (30) kindergarten kickoff (38)

Then I turned my Kitchen into a fun cafeteria….kindergarten kickoff (12)

USA Map art is something we have in our playroom so I just moved it out here for some fun decoration.  I made the banner out of cute back to school things I found in the Target Dollar Spot.kindergarten kickoff (2)MENU:

Spinach Artichoke Dip (my favorite & a crowd favorite)

Deli Platter & Wraps

Fruit: Grapes, Blueberries, Strawberries, PB&J, Apple Sauce, Cookies, Cupcakes and Apple Juicekindergarten kickoff (8) kindergarten kickoff (19) kindergarten kickoff (13) kindergarten kickoff (59)Love using fun school things in a new way….the glass beaker made a great straw holder.  Get one HEREkindergarten kickoff (1)I got these cupcakes made at a local grocery store and these adorable Back to School Cupcake toppers from Lauren Haddox Designs.  You just print them right from your own computer on cardstock and glue /tape them to toothpicks.

Cute Metal Cake stands are from HEREkindergarten kickoff (18)

Kindergarten Kickoff Party Agenda:

Kids arrived and grabbed some food and then just hung out, ate and talked.

1st activity: Kindergarten Questionnaire

There are a lot of different examples online, but I compiled my favorite questions and made my own.  You can get my FREE printable HERE. I love having kids fill these out because their answers are usually so funny and they are the best to have when they get older for memories.   Avery said she wants to be an artist when she grows up….last week it was a dolphin trainer?!

2nd activity: Back to School Bingo

I found these adorable bingo cards at Crazy Little Projects and could’t wait to play this.  She offers free printables with the cards and and drawing cards. We used M&M’s as markers and the first round there was a 3 way tie so we just did it again and had 1 winner.  My prizes were also from the Target Dollar Spot and were stuff like Map of the US puzzle, etc

3rd activity: Fruit Loop Minute to Win It game

So much fun! We passed out plates with a pipe cleaner and fruit loops.  The kids had 1 minute to put as many on the pipe cleaner as they could!  Then at the end they could wear them as bracelets. Here is our winner…she did amazing and got 16!

Next activity: Stacking Donuts Minute to Win It game

I wasn’t sure how many donuts the kids were going to be able to stack so I bought 3 bags of chocolate covered donuts (Ms Bairds) then I froze them (I highly recommend this…reduces the mess because they are hard).  We did 2 heats which was great because the kids could watch their friends.  Again they had 60 seconds to stack as many donuts as possible and when the timer went off that was the amount they got so they had to strategize when to stop stacking vs them falling over.

It was so much fun the parents got in on the action! My friends have serious talent!IMG_5479Our big winner!  haha

Final activity: Decorating school supplies

Every kid got a folder, notebook and pencil bag to decorate.  I bough a bunch of cute stickers at Hobby Lobby and let them have fun.  They got to keep these as party favors.IMG_5485**See more cute back to school party ideas on my Pinterest Board**

Then we finished the party with pictures and playing.  I got this photo idea from Momfessionals Kindergarten party…I just loved the way her pictures turned out.  I bought some black foam board, a white paint pen and wrote out Class of 2029.  Look at those cuties!IMG_5526 heart IMG_5528 heart IMG_5529 heartThis party was soooo much fun and really easy to put together.  I cannot wait to see what these kiddos do over the next 12 years.  Would be amazing if we get to repeat this picture then….I am putting these boards up in storage just in case.

Be sure to pin this picture to help you as you plan your party!  This can also be tweaked for Back to School party…doesn’t have to be Kindergarten

When designing our home I pulled inspiration from all over! Pinterest, Instagram, magazine, design books, etc. we had this long spot in our front entry that we were trying to figure out and when I saw this image (swipe to see) in @gilschaferthearchitect ‘s book it stopped me in my tracks. I loved the use of transoms and designated spaces. My architect @josephpaulhomes & his wife Michelle helped pull the whole look together. So happy with how it turned out.

My grandfather owned a grocery store in New Jersey. The scale hanging from the ceiling in our butler’s pantry was the scale in his store. My uncle had it for the longest time & gifted it to me when we moved into this home. I love it so much!! My mom has the cash register he used in his store in her home. I love decorating with items that have meaning & that tell a story.

I love hallways & nooks. They are a great way to add interest to your home. Natural light & details are key. This space connects our hearth room to the gameroom. The Dutch door goes out to our courtyard, the room at the end is my office and the door to the left (just out of the photo) goes to the pool bath. Lots going on in this space.
I saw this floor pattern in a design book & had to have it somewhere in our home. I love it so much!

Bathrooms are such a fun space to make bold choices. They are small so every decision & detail makes a big impact. Still in love with this wallpaper from @wallpapersgalore_

✨REMODEL UPDATE: FAMILY ROOM✨

This family room had good bones, but we needed to declutter , maximize storage, update furnishings & make the space more functional.

There was a wall of shelves that was just too much. We purged and decorated with items that she loved & had sentimental value. So many homes are built with tons of open shelving and you have to be really careful in these spaces because they can become a spot for clutter instead of being intentional.
•added cabinet doors to 2 sections of shelves for some much-needed hidden storage.
•utilized the shelving that was separate from the other ones to make a designated bar space that is intentional and great for entertaining.
•found an gorgeous antique bar back to go against the wall that again is used as a bar when they entertain. Previously, it was a huge bench that took up width, but added no height to the wall. This is a major focal point in this space so we made it both functional and beautiful.
• I am not a huge fan of sectional couches unless they are in very specific areas. I think sometimes when people have a big room, they look for a big furniture to take up the space but it doesn’t actually give you the most seating and the spacing is sometimes awkward. They still really wanted a leather couch in there so we kept that, but then used more tailored chairs to frame the space.
• found this gorgeous coffee table on Facebook marketplace. Such a find!
•Removed the huge windmill fan that really took away from the gorgeous architecture of the ceiling with the beams.
•filled in dead space with functional furniture, like a cute table perfect for game night.
•scaled back the TV so it made more sense over the fireplace and went with a frame one so there could be pretty art up there as it is a main focal point. (Art was off in this photo, but typically it looks like a vintage painting)

So excited with how this space turned out. It’s lighter, brighter, more functional & a better use of space. They have walls of windows along the back of the house with a beautiful view and now you’re able to focus on that more.

✨REMODEL UPDATE: DAUGHTER’S BATHROOM ✨

Throughout this remodel you will see two constant goals…brighten up the spaces & add functional storage. This bathroom was dark & dated. We took everything out and had a fresh start.

•New paint, wallpaper, tile, fixtures, lighting, etc.
•Raised the height of the counters & some additional cabinetry extending up to the ceiling for much needed storage.
•Added cute details to the side of the counters
•Removed the tub & added a glass door to the shower to make the space feel bigger & more open.

This sweet girl has brought us so much joy! We are “foster failures” & couldn’t be happier about it. Callie has been the best addition to our family.
Chat GPT made this cute art from our Christmas picture of her. She was living her best life with all the ribbon from the presents.

I love a mudroom! I don’t care what size house I live in from here on out I’ll always have some “mudroom” space…even if it’s a tiny little spot. It’s so great to have a drop zone to keep organized. This space got lots of use during our ice storm with all the wet shoes, etc & these brick floors were great!!

Feels strange getting back to work this week. We’ve been living in PJs and been asking what day it was for about a week now. Snowmageddon 2026 was fun & we still have piles of ice on the ground….BUT nice to go back to a bit of a routine. January felt like 47 days 🤪
