New Kitchen: Range vs Range top/Double Ovens

March 1, 2021 By houseofhargrove@gmail.com

One of the biggest decisions when building or remodeling a kitchen is picking out the appliances.  There are so many decisions to be made, but one of the biggest for me was if I wanted a range or range top and double ovens.  I went back and forth, but I am sharing my decisions below.

A few weeks ago I share on Instagram stories that I wanted to do a range top and double ovens.  Let me start by explaining what that is.  You may already know this, but I didn’t before I researched.  Range tops are basically the top part of a range.  They are the stove portion with the knobs, etc, but don’t have ovens below.  My last home had a Wolf range top and 2 drawers below for storing pots/pans, etc.  I LOVED this set up.  A cooktop is similar except the knobs, etc are on top of the stove.  Personally, I like the look of a range top better than a cook top, but in both scenarios there is no oven below.

ORIGINAL PLAN

Like I said, originally I wanted to do this set up again.  I am tall so I don’t love bending over to get in my ovens.  I prefer a double oven set up.  My plan was do to another range top with double ovens just like I had in my last house.

When approaching design I am always evaluating design vs function.  What I mean by that is that some of the designs I like are beautiful, but not as functional.  In some areas I am willing to make that trade.  For example, marble is way more high maintenance than other countertops.  For many people that trade off is not worth it, for me it 100% is.  I will be having marble in my kitchen even though it is more work.  For other things, I may prefer the look of something better, but function takes priority.  An example of this is I prefer the way a 2 story home looks, however we really wanted a 1 story home, so in that example I went with function over design as we are building a 1 story home.

What I really like to do is find a solution that incorporates both design and function.  When it came to my appliances I really love the look of a french range.  I think they are so beautiful and a huge statement piece.  I searched high and low to find a french looking range top.  Those are very very hard to find.  They just don’t offer anything on the market currently that met what I was looking for.  Most range tops have bulky knobs and I love the unique french knobs.  The closest I found was Bertazzoni, but I didn’t love it.  There were a few pictures online of some french options, but when I tried contacting those companies, they only offered ranges??  I have been on the hunt for this for YEARS.  You can read a blog post I wrote about this topic in 2015!

Oh well, I decided to give up the dream of a french range top and moved on to the best looking range tops.  I knew I wanted brass knobs.  There were only a few options I found that fit that description.  Cafe , Wolf (there is an option to order brass knobs) and Blue Star.  There may be a couple others, but these were the top of my list.  I started doing a bunch of research and was honestly shocked at how expensive range tops were.  When we bought our last house everything was included in the total price, so I didn’t see things broken down.  The range tops were almost as expensive as the range themselves and a range top with double wall oven was substantially more expensive than a range.

I mentioned earlier I LOVE French ranges.  They are gorgeous works of art, but they are $$$$.  I didn’t want to spend $15-20k on a range.  While I was researching I discovered ILVE ranges.  OMG yall, they are stunning!!! They are French ranges at an affordable price.  I discovered I could get a french range and a wall oven for less money than a range top and double wall oven!!!  This changed everything!

NEW PLAN

I am now getting an ILVE 48″ range for my kitchen and doing a wall oven in my butlers pantry.  I will end up with even more oven space than my original plan, get the look I love and save $$$.  I am so so excited!!  There are 3 different ILVE lines.  The professional line (more industrial look), The Majestic line (more expensive) and the Nostalgie line.  You can see all the differences HERE.  The Nostalgie line is perfect for what I need.

This range will be the jewel of our kitchen so now the hard part is picking out color.  I shared on Instagram stories I am really struggling with Stainless/Brass or custom Grey/Brass.  I keep going back and forth.  I will write a more in depth blog post about this soon.

These ranges come in 9 standard colors with 3 trim options and there is also an option to do custom and you can choose any color you want from the RAL color chart.  The sky is the limit.  You really cannot go wrong.

Anyway, I am so excited about this change.  It will really give me the best of both worlds.  Cannot wait to share more soon with my kitchen mood board!

I am curious, which are you?  Team range top/double oven or team range?

Wow! What a beautiful option!! I love range tops and cooktops and have always had both along with double wall ovens. Like you, I’m tall and I appreciate not having to bend over a hot oven. Also, I have loved being able to bake, roast etc multiple things at once with 2 ovens especially during dinner parties and holidays. I think this line you’ve found is absolutely stunning and functional and will serve you and your family well. Can’t wait to see it all come together! Thanks for sharing’

Thank you so much! Yes, that set up has always worked for me. I think I will end up using my wall oven in the butlers pantry more than the range oven because it is what I am used to, but we will see. Thanks for your sweet words!!

My house in Richardson had double wall ovens and a cooktop with drawers under like your previous home. I thot it was best thing in the world. Had never had that before nor since. When back up north I didn’t know how to make Thanksgiving dinner without a double ovens lol. QVC showed me how with a roaster lol. Your new plan works well.

Yes, I loved this set up too. It was so easy. HAHA. Our rental only has 1 oven and it has definitely been challenging when hosting for the holidays. With Covid, our celebrations have been much smaller, but I miss having the 2 ovens right now.

Did you know WD40 will hide the spots that stainless steel tends to get? My Sears appliance repair guy used it on my refrigerator years ago & it’s the best! Just lightly spray on cloth, run in circles & do the say with clean cloth to remove residue

Oh this is a great tip. I didn’t know that. I love the way stainless looks, but the spots drive me crazy with kids! I will try this! Thank you.

Your post is so timely!! Yay!! I love the Cafe French door double ovens and their range top, too! However, my new kitchen would be asymmetrical with that option and perfectly symmetrical with a range. I’m beginning to opt for the French range. Thank you for sharing your resources and thoughts!

✨REMODEL UPDATE: DAUGHTER’S BATHROOM ✨

Throughout this remodel you will see two constant goals…brighten up the spaces & add functional storage. This bathroom was dark & dated. We took everything out and had a fresh start.

🩵 comment SHOP for sources

•New paint, wallpaper, tile, fixtures, lighting, etc.
•Raised the height of the counters & some additional cabinetry extending up to the ceiling for much needed storage.
•Added cute details to the side of the counters
•Removed the tub & added a glass door to the shower to make the space feel bigger & more open.

BEST PUMPKIN PIE RECIPE...Pumpkin Chiffon Pie

Want to bring/make the favorite dish this year for Thanksgiving?? Look no further!

🤎🥧 Comment PIE to have the recipe sent to your DM

To be honest, I am not a huge traditional pumpkin pie fan.  However, this pumpkin pie my mom made growing up is my all time favorite.  It is pumpkin flavored, but very light.  It is absolutely delicious. If you are hosting this year or bringing a dessert, I highly recommend trying this Pumpkin Chiffon Pie!  It is sure to be a family & crowd favorite!

This recipe will always remind me of my mom & she gave me the original hand written recipe card that I have framed in my butlers pantry. It’s very special to me! Can’t wait to make it with her this Thanksgiving!

💚 I’m so excited to finally share my office reveal! 💚

It’s amazing what a little wallpaper and fabric can do to completely transform a room. I found the most beautiful designs at @spoonflower — one of my go-to sources for wallpaper and textiles.

From the wallpapered ceiling, to the block-print café curtains and coordinating fabric on the lamp and chair, these prints truly pulled the whole space together. The quality, selection, and customization options at Spoonflower are incredible!

I couldn’t love this space more.

✨Y’ALL… I’M OBSESSED!!! ✨

When we built this house, I dreamed of having gas lanterns—but with a propane tank, it just didn’t make sense. Back then, the “flame” bulbs that existed were super orange and totally fake-looking.

Fast forward to now… I found these new LED bulbs on Amazon and they are a complete GAME CHANGER. The color, the flicker—everything looks just like a real flame! They’re even prettier in person and at such a good price point.

I had to wait a little bit on shipping, but totally worth it!

📍WOODSTOCK, VT

This was one of my favorite stops on our fall New England trip. Seriously the most charming town. Think Star Hollows!

Everything was walkable and oh so charming.

🍁 TO DO:
*on the way to Woodstock check out Cold Hollow Cider Mill & get some donuts

•Sugarbush Farm: maple syrup & locally crafted cheese
•explore downtown: lots of cute shops (121 Home, F.H. Gillingham & Sons)
•get ice cream at Woodstock Scoops
•visit covered bridges: Middle Bridge (in town), Taftsville bridge
•Woodstock Inn..absolutely stunning! Get lots of pictures
•walk Pleasant St and see the famous pumpkin fence house & other gorgeous homes

🍁 FOOD:
•Montvert
•Soulfully Good Cafe

We stayed at The Shire. It was perfect for our family. Had a cute little market across the street that we picked some food up at one night and just went back to our room and watched a movie. We picked Goodwill Hunting since we were headed to Harvard the next day. It was a fun little evening.

we didn’t have time for this, but lots of people go hike Quechee Gorge which is nearby & supposed to be incredible.

We did Stowe & Woodstock and although I liked both, Woodstock was my favorite.

Driving around New England in the fall is spectacular. Everything looks like a painting.

I highly recommend adding the scenic Kancamagus Highway to your trip. We left Kennebunkport, ME and took the Kancamagus Hwy on our way to Stowe, VT. It might not be the most direct way, but it was totally worth it. It’s 34 miles long through the White Mountains.

We left ample time that day so we could stop take pictures, explore, etc.

TIP: make sure you have a full tank of gas, have snacks, go to the bathroom, etc. before you get started because there’s nowhere to stop on the way.

TOP SPOTS TO SEE:
• Albany covered bridge
• Lower Falls
• Rocky Gorge
• Sabbaday Falls
• Sugar Hill scenic overlook

• Champney Falls (if you have more time) This stop involves a more lengthy hike to see them

Have y’all ever driven “The Kanc” before? If so what were your favorite stops?

Also, if you see something that catches your eye just pull over. Some of the favorite spots we found while traveling New England were just random pit stops on the side of the road. Everything is gorgeous around there this time of year and looks like a postcard.

Salem surprised us…
it was so much more than witches and Halloween. It’s a cute coastal town full of charm! Brick streets, cobblestone, gorgeous architecture, beautiful parks old candy shops…such a cute town.

You will hear mixed reviews. Some people love it at Halloween. Some people say avoid it. Yes it’s crowded, yes it’s touristy, but we loved it. We love Hocus Pocus so we soaked in all of that fun, but then we explored and really saw how beautiful everything was when you get outside of the main downtown area.

We were there a couple of hours & got everything in. It’s the perfect day trip from Boston.

TO DO:
•Explore downtown
•get a picture with the Bewitched statue
•We took a self guided Hocus Pocus tour (see my other reel with all the spots and addresses), there are tons of guided ones if you prefer that
•walk by The Witch House
•check out the backyard at Ropes Mansion
•stroll Essex Street (keep walking straight past Ropes Mansion-Allison’s house in Hocus Pocus) & you’ll walk right into a gorgeous neighborhood full of Colonial homes.
•go see Max & Dani’s house from the movie & explore that neighborhood. More gorgeous homes right on the coast
•Pioneer Village was fun to see
•if you’re into all the spooky stuff there are tons of tours and museums you can check out.

We had pizza at Flying Saucer & it was delicious. It was a fun little Halloween festive stop for us that we all enjoyed.
Almost everything is walkable.

Best road trip advice...just pull over!

We had a lot of time in the car on our trip to New England last year with lots of famous outlook sites and stops planned. Don’t get me wrong...they were all amazing, but some of the prettiest areas we saw were just random parts off the road. We would see something from the window and just pull over to soak it in.
The trees are gorgeous everywhere, there is so much water, beautiful churches, cute little country stores, old cemeteries, barns, bridges...you name it!
This particular spot was somewhere in New Hampshire that we just saw and pulled over and it turned out to be one of our favorite photos! There was no one else there. It looks like a postcard and there are spots like this everywhere. Some of my favorite times on the trip were just driving in the car and soaking it all in! 🧡💛❤️🍂🍁

📍Stowe, Vermont

We visited Stowe in Mid October last year. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and the leaves didn’t disappoint. We were there during the week so it wasn’t overly crowded.
It had a small town, relaxed feel, but was bigger than some of the other places we visited. In the winter it’s a big ski town & it definitely had that vibe.

We went with kids and it was a great family spot. We focused on kid friendly activities and restaurants.

EXPLORE DOWNTOWN:
⛪️ See the beautiful Stowe Community Church
🛍️ Explore the cute shops (Country Store on Main & Farm Home Marketplace were some of my favorites)
🥞 Breakfast at The Butlers Pantry...pro tip...it’s a very popular quaint restaurant in the heart of downtown with long waits BUT you can join the Yelp waitlist online before you go. We were able to walk right in
📸 Picture in front of the Stowe mural on the side of Laughing Moon Chocolates

VIEWS:
•Smugglers Notch Drive
•Gondola Sky Ride
•Drive on mountain road (just outside of downtown) for lots of great picture spots. This video is taken from a lookout about 2 min out of downtown.

ACTIVITIES:
🌽 Percy Farm corn maze was a hit with the kids
•Brookdale Bridge is close by and beautiful
🎶 Von Trapp Lodge & Brewery are worth seeing. Beautiful views & you can get a day pass to enjoy the incredible property

OTHER POPULAR ATTRACTIONS:
🍦 Ben & Jerry’s factory tour
🍎 Cold Hollow Cider Mill

🧀BUILD A CHARCUTERIE SPREAD PARTY🧀

Ok y’all…you need to throw this party!
SO.MUCH.FUN & so easy!

So the idea is everyone brings their favorite item for a charcuterie board to the party. Can be a cheese, cracker, dip, but, meat, jelly, sweet…you get the idea.
Then by the end of the night you leave with some new ideas for your own parties.

It’s a great time of year to host to get new ideas before the busy holiday/hosting season.

I just put butcher paper out on my island and got the board started with a few of my favorites. Then as guests rolled in the continued to add to the spread.

It was so yummy & easy. Guests only need to bring 1 item and the host doesn’t have to provide a ton.

I highly recommend throwing this party with your group of friends!!

Great good, great company…such a wonderful night!
🍇🫒🧀🥖🥓

❤️What’s your favorite item on a charcuterie board?? Share in the comments!

**one of the top items was a biscuit stuffed with Boursin cheese**

**last party’s top item was: baby arugula with avocado oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper- season to taste. Then take a little bunch of arugula and wrap 1/2 a slice of prosciutto around it**
