Favorite Beauty Products

March 2, 2018 By houseofhargrove@gmail.com

Yall know I love home decor, but my first love was beauty!  I love all things make-up, skincare, hair care, tools, treatments, etc.  I get lots of questions about my make-up so today I am sharing my favorite beauty products.

A little background. . .you may or may not know that I had always dreamed of working corporate for a cosmetics company one day.  I wanted to be in the marketing department and get make up featured in movies!  How much fun would that be?!!  Anyway, one summer in college I moved to Los Angeles and went to make-up school to become a certified make up artist.  Through college I worked at Sephora and was a free lance make-up artist for several different brands.  It was so much fun!  After college, I was an Assistant Buyer at Neiman Marcus in the Beauty Department.  I bought Chanel, Laura Mercier, NARS, Kevin Aucoin, Chantecaille, just to name a few.  I had a blast in this job and was all set up to move to LA and work corporate for a cosmetic company when I met my other dream. . .my husband!  We started planning our future and LA just wasn’t in the cards. Anyway, all this said to show you my passion for beauty!  One of the perks of being in the cosmetic industry was GRATIS (free product)!!  You got to try so many amazing products for FREE.  It was amazing constantly getting to try new things and see which ones I LOVED.  Today I am sharing my FAVORITES. . .MY GO-TO products.  I definitely change it up here and there, but these are the things I 100% recommend and never can live without!

MY FAVORITE BEAUTY PRODUCTS

FACE

I listed the face items below in the order I use them.

  1. SUPER GOOP CC CREAM: This is the best foundation ever!  It is a CC Cream so it is light weight, but does add coverage.  I have shared this before and have heard from many of you that you are also in love with it.  It has SPF 35 and the best reviews.  Most people are Medium/Light. I wear this everyday even if I am wearing nothing else because it really evens out your skin and adds sun protection. If it is sold out at the link above you can also purchase HERE.
  2. MAC PRO LONGWEAR CONCEALER: This liquid concealer feels lightweight, but gives amazing matte coverage. Smooths, covers red marks and dark circles.  It wears all day long.  This product also has amazing reviews!
  3. LAURA MERCIER MINERAL POWDER: Oil free loose powder with sheer to medium finish.  I dust this on lightly over my CC Cream and concealer to set everything and I love that it is made of mineral powder so it is good for your skin.  Gives a flawless finish that helps make you look airbrushed
  4. MAC MINERALIZE SKINFINISH- SOFT & GENTLE: (Highlighter)  I use this on my cheek bones and as my all over eyeshadow.  It gives a nice highlight and glow that makes skin look youthful! Such a pretty finish and easy to use
  5. TOO FACED BRONZER-SUN BUNNY: (Bronzer) I love that this has 2 colors you can mix together because it gives you a natural tan/bronze look.  Beautiful color, no orange look.  I use this under my cheek bones, my hair line and a little bit around my jaw line.  This helps to get a contoured look.
  6. BOBBI BROWN BRONZE SHIMMER BRICK: (Blush) I love the mix of colors and they add a beautiful bronze, blush look.  I use this on my cheekbones to blend the bronzer and highlighter above.  It adds beautiful color and the shimmer finish helps the skin glow.
  7. CHANEL POUDRE LUMIERE SHIMMER POWDER PINK SPARKLE: Ok, so this has lasted me years!  So much so that I just went to find it for you and realized it has been discontinued.  I add just a touch of this beautiful light pink shimmer powder to the apple of my cheeks.  It just gives a nice glow and pop of color.  Here is a very similar one with great reviews in color Supernova.  It is the one I will buy when mine runs out!
    • BLENDING….I forgot to show this in the photo, but I am OBSESSED with my Kabuki Brush.  It is a large fluffy brush that I rub all over my face at the end to blend everything together.  This helps all the highlighter, bronzer and blush flow seamlessly looking natural and like you have been airbrushed!

LIPS

8. RIMMEL LIP LINER-EAST END SNOB: This is a great neutral lip liner.  It is super inexpensive and goes with tons of lip colors.  Has a creamy soft texture that glides on easily with a long lasting matte finish.  I line my lips with this and then apply the lip colors below.

9. JOUER LONG WEAR CREAM LIQUID LIPSTICK-TAWNY ROSE: I am in love with this lip color and wrote an entire post about Jouer lip glosses you can read here.  This one is a great neutral that goes on smoothly and dries quickly to a long wearing matte finish.  This lasts through eating, etc.  It also smells like cake!

10. JOUER LIP TOPPER-ROSE GOLD: I love all the Jouer lip toppers, but this is my favorite.  I layer it on top of the color above to get a beautiful finish.   Both this and Tawny Rose can be worn alone, but look amazing layered.

EYES

I am sharing my go-to every day look below.

11. URBAN DECAY ANTI-AGING EYESHADOW PRIMER: I put this all over my eyelid which helps keep my shadow crease free and last all day.  After I have done my CC cream, concealer, powder I put this on and let it dry.  Then I use the MAC highlighter mentioned above all over my lid as a base color.

12. MAC PRO PIGMENT-ROSE GOLD: This is one of my favorite products ever!  I wrote an entire post about it HERE.  I use this on my eyelid and then blend it into the crease.  It adds the most beautiful color and lasts all days.  Looks good on all eye colors but really makes blue eyes pop.  It is Neutral with a punch.  I get asked about this eyeshadow all the time from my Instagram stories.

13.  URBAN DECAY EYESHADOW-BAKED: Pretty gold eyeshadow that I use on my eyelid.  I switch between this and the color above.  This is a pressed powder and the MAC pigment above is loose.  Just depends which one I am in the mood to use.

14. SHU UMERA EYELASH CURLER: This is the gold standard of eyelash curler.  It is incredible what this tool can do!  Makes your eyelashes curled and look so much more open!

15. LOREAL LASH PARADISE MASCARA-BLACKEST BLACK: Adds amazing volume and length.  Lashes are soft, full and very black.  My real lashes have been transformed by LASH BOOST (so much thicker and longer) and combined with this mascara I get asked all the time if I have fake lashes.  The combo of Lash Boost and this mascara have really transformed my eyes!

16. MAYBELLINE MASTER PRECISE EYELINER-BLACK: Felt tip liner that goes on smoothly and leaves a fine line.  Stays all day.  Waterproof, smudgeproof.  I make a thin line near my lash line and it really helps make my eyes pop!

17. KEVYN AUCION PRECISION BROW PENCIL-ASH BLONDE: Very thin pencil which allows you to make hair like strokes.  The perfect blonde/brown color.  Has brush on other end of the pencil to brush brows.  Not the cheapest brow pencil, but every time I try others I come back to this one because it is by far my favorite!

If you read the online reviews of my favorite beauty products you will see I am not alone in loving them.  The reviews are incredible!!  Everyone needs these products in their make-up bag.  Easy to use, long wearing and beautiful finish!

When designing our home I pulled inspiration from all over! Pinterest, Instagram, magazine, design books, etc. we had this long spot in our front entry that we were trying to figure out and when I saw this image (swipe to see) in @gilschaferthearchitect ‘s book it stopped me in my tracks. I loved the use of transoms and designated spaces. My architect @josephpaulhomes & his wife Michelle helped pull the whole look together. So happy with how it turned out.

My grandfather owned a grocery store in New Jersey. The scale hanging from the ceiling in our butler’s pantry was the scale in his store. My uncle had it for the longest time & gifted it to me when we moved into this home. I love it so much!! My mom has the cash register he used in his store in her home. I love decorating with items that have meaning & that tell a story.

I love hallways & nooks. They are a great way to add interest to your home. Natural light & details are key. This space connects our hearth room to the gameroom. The Dutch door goes out to our courtyard, the room at the end is my office and the door to the left (just out of the photo) goes to the pool bath. Lots going on in this space.
I saw this floor pattern in a design book & had to have it somewhere in our home. I love it so much!

Bathrooms are such a fun space to make bold choices. They are small so every decision & detail makes a big impact. Still in love with this wallpaper from @wallpapersgalore_

✨REMODEL UPDATE: FAMILY ROOM✨

This family room had good bones, but we needed to declutter , maximize storage, update furnishings & make the space more functional.

There was a wall of shelves that was just too much. We purged and decorated with items that she loved & had sentimental value. So many homes are built with tons of open shelving and you have to be really careful in these spaces because they can become a spot for clutter instead of being intentional.
•added cabinet doors to 2 sections of shelves for some much-needed hidden storage.
•utilized the shelving that was separate from the other ones to make a designated bar space that is intentional and great for entertaining.
•found an gorgeous antique bar back to go against the wall that again is used as a bar when they entertain. Previously, it was a huge bench that took up width, but added no height to the wall. This is a major focal point in this space so we made it both functional and beautiful.
• I am not a huge fan of sectional couches unless they are in very specific areas. I think sometimes when people have a big room, they look for a big furniture to take up the space but it doesn’t actually give you the most seating and the spacing is sometimes awkward. They still really wanted a leather couch in there so we kept that, but then used more tailored chairs to frame the space.
• found this gorgeous coffee table on Facebook marketplace. Such a find!
•Removed the huge windmill fan that really took away from the gorgeous architecture of the ceiling with the beams.
•filled in dead space with functional furniture, like a cute table perfect for game night.
•scaled back the TV so it made more sense over the fireplace and went with a frame one so there could be pretty art up there as it is a main focal point. (Art was off in this photo, but typically it looks like a vintage painting)

So excited with how this space turned out. It’s lighter, brighter, more functional & a better use of space. They have walls of windows along the back of the house with a beautiful view and now you’re able to focus on that more.

✨REMODEL UPDATE: DAUGHTER’S BATHROOM ✨

Throughout this remodel you will see two constant goals…brighten up the spaces & add functional storage. This bathroom was dark & dated. We took everything out and had a fresh start.

•New paint, wallpaper, tile, fixtures, lighting, etc.
•Raised the height of the counters & some additional cabinetry extending up to the ceiling for much needed storage.
•Added cute details to the side of the counters
•Removed the tub & added a glass door to the shower to make the space feel bigger & more open.

This sweet girl has brought us so much joy! We are “foster failures” & couldn’t be happier about it. Callie has been the best addition to our family.
Chat GPT made this cute art from our Christmas picture of her. She was living her best life with all the ribbon from the presents.

I love a mudroom! I don’t care what size house I live in from here on out I’ll always have some “mudroom” space…even if it’s a tiny little spot. It’s so great to have a drop zone to keep organized. This space got lots of use during our ice storm with all the wet shoes, etc & these brick floors were great!!

Feels strange getting back to work this week. We’ve been living in PJs and been asking what day it was for about a week now. Snowmageddon 2026 was fun & we still have piles of ice on the ground….BUT nice to go back to a bit of a routine. January felt like 47 days 🤪
